FHS AD Team Wins 3rd, Sponsor Named State Coach of Year

Friendswood High School Academic Decathlon team won third place in the state at the Thomas E. Moseley State Finals competition held in San Antonio February 27-29, 2022.

Coach Renee Simons was named 2022 State Coach of the Year.

Sponsors/Coaches include Renae Simons. Adam Brown, Ray Monahan, and Elizabeth Woodley.

The FHS Academic Decathlon team competed in the competition as one of the top 40 teams in Texas. According to Coach Adam Brown, the team tied for third in the medium school division.

For individual and team accomplishments, these students collectively earned over $7,000 in college scholarship funds. Earning any medal at the state competition is extraordinarily difficult, and several of our Decathletes won more than one, Brown noted.

Daniel Chen (Honors Division) won a Gold Medal in Art, Bronze Medal in Economics, Bronze Medal in Literature, and a Gold Medal in Interview with a perfect score of 1,000. He received 5th Place Overall Individual Score in the Honors Division

Emily Thomas (Honors Division) won a Bronze Medal in Art.

Stanislav Shevkoplyas (Honors Division) won a Gold Medal in Speech with a perfect score of 1000).

Brodie Lynch (Scholastic Division) won a Bronze Medal in Math and a Bronze Medal in Social Science.

Emily Chapman (Scholastic Division) won a Silver Medal in Art and a Bronze Medal in Social Science.

Jaden Howard (Scholastic Division) won a Gold Medal in Economics. Silver Medal in Math, Silver Medal in Social Science and Silver Medal in Speech. Howard placed 4th Place Overall Individual Score in the Scholastic Division.

Kyle Clauson (Varsity Division) won a Silver Medal in Social Science and a Bronze Medal in Essay. He placed 5th Place Overall Individual Score in the Varsity Division.

Christopher Lancaster (Varsity Division) won a Silver Medal in Speech.

David Selby (Varsity Division) won a Gold Medal in Interview with a perfect score of 1000.

The Texas Academic Decathlon is a scholarship program for high school students from all academic levels encompassing objective and subjective events.

At FHS, Academic Decathlon participation is offered as a Language Arts elective course that receives one credit and counts as an AP course for grade points earned.
