Parks Dept. to host Dog Days of Summer ‘Pool Paw-ty’

Date:

The Friendswood Parks and Recreation Department is having a first ever Dog Days of Summer event and the community is invited to get their leashes and lifejackets ready.

It’s a Pool “Paw-ty” planned for August 20 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Friendswood City Pool in Stevenson Park. The event is planned for dogs only (no cats or other pets allowed). One human 18 years and older must accompany each dog who attends. But, no people are allowed in the water. The free event will give dogs a swim party of their own.

All dog owners and/or handlers are responsible for their dog’s behavior and potty break cleanups.

All dogs attending must have current vaccinations to participate.

There will be a maximum of 75 dogs in the facility at a time.

Sponsors for the event include Parks and Rec, Gimme a Bark, Pet Supplies Plus, Little Pitties Rescue, and Family Animal Hospital of Friendswood.

Space is limited so register with QR code on the flyer on the Parks and Rec Facebook page or at https://secure.rec1.com/TX/friendswood-tx/catalog under the Special Events tab before all spaces are filled.

For more information, contact Parks and Rec at 281-996-3220.

The pool is located in Stevenson Park at 900 Cedarwood Ave.

The Dog Days of Summer occur each year between July and August, the period of the summer’s peak temperatures along with uncomfortable humidity.

The dates coincide with the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Romans referred to this period as dies caniculares or “days of the dog star,” which was eventually translated as just “dog days.”

In ancient Greece and Rome, the Dog Days of Summer were believed to bring drought, bad luck, unrest, both human and canine madness and extreme heat. This year, dogs in Friendswood and their owners are invited to cool off at the City Pool and enjoy their own Paw-ty.
