Alvin ISD Celebrates the Dedication of Delbra Orum Nichols and Wilma Fountain Mock Elementary School

Date:

On Sunday, September 17, Alvin ISD proudly celebrated the dedication of its newest elementary school, Delbra Orum Nichols and Wilma Fountain Mock Elementary. The event was a testament to the district’s commitment to education excellence and a tribute to two remarkable women who have made significant contributions to the Alvin ISD community.

Ms. Nichols and Ms. Mock both began their careers in Alvin ISD in the 1970s. Both ladies were part of the staff that opened Hood-Case Elementary and later won Teacher of the Year honors. Now, years after retirement, both continue to tutor at Alvin ISD schools.
The dedication ceremony drew a full house of attendees, including students, parents, educators, and community members, who gathered to mark this momentous occasion. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, gratitude, and a sense of unity.

The event began with the National Anthem, sung by the District Musical Cast of “Annie.” After Executive Director of Communications Renae Rives introduced the guests of honor and other dignitaries, Superintendent Carol Nelson expressed her profound appreciation for the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in making this school a reality. She emphasized the dedication of Ms. Nichols and Ms. Mock and all they have contributed not only to the district, but also to her own three children.

“Ms. Nichols and Ms. Mock both taught my own children so I know first-hand how amazing they are and what an impact they had on not only my children, but hundreds of children in Alvin ISD,” shared Mrs. Nelson.

Board President Earl Humbird and the Alvin ISD school board had the distinct honor of presenting Ms. Nichols, Ms. Mock, and Principal Sandy Holdsclaw, with a ceremonial key to the building.

After unveiling the beautiful photographs of the two women that would hang in the front of the school, Ms. Nichols and Ms. Mock both took to the stage to express their deep gratitude and shared their heartfelt emotions about having a school named in their honor.

“When I walk in this building, I’m still in shock. This was not on my bucket list,” shared Ms. Nichols. “You don’t get up in the morning and say, ‘I want a school named after me,’ so this is such an honor.”

“You cannot imagine what an honor it is for us to have our name on a building,” added Ms. Mock.

The dedication of Delbra Orum Nichols and Wilma Fountain Mock Elementary School is a testament to Alvin ISD’s commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities to its students and recognizing the outstanding contributions of its community members.
Alvin ISD extends its sincere appreciation to all those who attended the dedication ceremony, as well as the countless individuals who worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.
