Pearland City Council on Monday opted to postpone a scheduled first approval of Pearland 2040, a future plan for the city that’s been in the works for 18 months.
“There are some things I’d like to see before we adopt this,” Councilman Adrian Hernandez said.
City Manager Trent Epperson described the city’s comprehensive plan as “the guide to what our city will look like in the future in terms of neighborhoods, parks, retail, infrastructure, placemaking, economic development.”
Updated every five to 10 years, a comprehensive plan is used by cities to guide future development and set long-range goals. Pearland first adopted one in 1968 and last updated it in 2015.
Contracted to the firm Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., the plan thus far has gone through an extensive public meeting and comment process, Epperson said. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved it in October.
Changes discussed Monday included adjustments to parks thoroughfare plans, making more of the employment centers walkable and a more user-friendly format.
“I know everybody wants to get going and get this thing implemented, but we need to have a document that this body can get fully behind,” Mayor Kevin Cole said. “I think we need to digest some of these comments and how to address those before voting on it.”
