Alvin ISD Education Foundation Turtle Race a Success

UTMB Health was the title sponsor for the Annual Alvin ISD Education Foundation Turtle Race, and United Healthcare was the title sponsor of the Turtle Race Fun Run. The location and the weather helped create a great atmosphere for the 747 runners and the 40 vendors in attendance. Most importantly, Alvin ISD students, staff, community members, and friends adopted 13,066 turtles that raced down Mustang Bayou.

The adopters of the first thirteen turtles to cross the finish line received prizes as well as the last place and slowest swimmer prizes. Once final numbers are in, the Foundation expects to have raised over $140,000 for Innovative Teaching Grants, student and teacher scholarships, and more for the students and staff throughout Alvin ISD.

“It was a great day and a wonderful community event. We love to see the staff, students, and families enjoying the Fun Run and activities together,” said Alvin ISD Education Foundation Board member and Turtle Race chairperson Mary Jane Crumm.

The winning turtle was adopted by Easton and Greyson Chapman, who won a $1,500 travel voucher provided by Stantec. Ellie Hall won the second prize of a $1,000 shopping spree provided by Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union. Cate Knafl won the third-place prize of a $500 gift card provided by Texas Advantage Community Bank.

The fourth-place winner was Sophia Davis, who won a 65” TV; Brandon Raber won fifth prize, Beats Studio Pro Headphones donated by Alvin Pest Control. Christina Landmark won sixth place, which was two HLSR tickets to the Zac Brown Band donated by TDEC, Inc. Electrical Contractors; Deborah Sullivan won seventh place and six passes to the Houston Zoo donated by the Houston Zoo, Harper Borm won eighth place of two tickets to the Alvin Music Festival donated by Alvin Sunrise Rotary; Saniya Le Callegari won ninth place of four tickets to Sugar Land Space Cowboys; Kelley Smith won tenth place which is a $100 Grand 1894 Opera House and a $50 Landry’s gift card donated by The 1894 Grand and the Foundation; Sandy Holdsclaw won 11th place which included Miller Outdoor Theatre VIP tickets and a $50 BJs gift card donated by Miller Outdoor Theatre and the Foundation, and 12th place was a Kendra Scott jewelry won by Jovan Lam and donated by Kendra Scott; 13th place was a Raising Cane’s Basket donated by Raising Cane’s East Pearland and Finally, the Slowest Swimmer prize of a Whataburger gift box with Whataburger for a year went to Quinn Ruiz.

In addition, every runner received a t-shirt, and finishers received medals. The 5K Fun Run winners were Anisa Mercado, the overall female, and the overall male winner was Jorge Mercado.

The Kids 1K Run winners were 1stplace girls McKenzie Pier and Linda Sumrall in 2nd Place, and 3rd Place Della Bertrand. The boys’ 1K winners were 1stplace Kolby Hall, 2nd John Mills, and 3rd Place Dylan Ellis. The timing company was Run Houston Timing, and the 5K race results can be found at www.runhoustontiming.com.
