Alvin ISD Board Establishes Citizen’s Advisory Committee to Address Facility Needs

Date:

Recognizing the dynamic growth within the district, the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees has called for the facilitation of a Citizens’ Advisory Committee.

This committee’s role will be to evaluate potential needs and bring a recommendation to the Board of Trustees on how to address facility needs and challenges associated with rapid student enrollment growth.
Alvin ISD is a fast-growing district currently serving 29,892 students.

According to Zonda Demographics, the district is projected to enroll more than 33,074 students by the academic year 2028-29 and approximately 36,951 students by 2033-34. These projections highlight the rapid growth anticipated in the district, necessitating careful planning and strategic decision-making.

Zonda Demographics further reports that there are more than 19,000 future home lots within the Alvin ISD attendance zone, indicating significant residential development. This surge in construction projects is expected to contribute to the district’s growth over the next 3-5 years.

The Citizens Advisory Committee represents taxpayers and residents, including parents, elected officials, and business representatives, and will provide meaningful information to the school district by developing recommendations that:

• Consider the educational needs of all students.
• Provide an adequate and appropriate learning environment.
• Are fiscally sound
• Reflect community values and perceptions of need.
• Include recommended solutions for aging facilities and program growth.
• Include recommended solutions for new facilities needed to accommodate student enrollment growth.
• Are based on current, relevant data and best practices
• Adhere to law and policy.
• To the extent possible, provide the school district with recommendations that include information regarding the priority of each project.

The Board of Trustees emphasizes the importance of community engagement in this process, as the Citizens’ Advisory Committee will serve as a bridge between the school district and the diverse communities it serves.

“Engaging our community is crucial as we plan for the future of Alvin ISD,” shared Alvin ISD Superintendent Carol Nelson. “By actively involving the community, the Board hopes that the committee is able to make informed decisions that align with the needs and expectations of all its stakeholders.”

To uphold our commitment to transparency, Alvin ISD has launched a webpage to provide regular updates on the committee’s progress, ensuring the community stays informed and engaged in the ongoing work. Visit www.alvinisd.net/CAC to stay up to date on the committee’s progress.

The CAC is expected to meet five times over the next four months, with the first meeting being held on February 12 at 6:30 pm. All meetings are open to the public and will be held at the Alvin ISD Heritage Complex – Liberty Alumni Hall. Public input is welcomed. On June 12, 2024, the CAC is expected to make a final recommendation to the Board.
