The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has issued a warning regarding fraudulent letters claiming the state plans to seize assets and property for unpaid taxes unless payment is made in seven days.
The scam letters or emails typically demand immediate payment — often via a specific method.
“Be incredibly wary whenever you receive unexpected messages like these, as they can be a trap,” the office said in a statement issued on Jan. 26. “These (letters) are designed to get you to react by calling the criminals’ phone number or clicking on a fake link to solve the problem. The consequences can be catastrophic.”
Those who click on links in scam emails may also become victims of identity theft or have malware installed on their devices.
Anyone receiving an unexpected message or letter containing demands or threats about unpaid tax should not call the number or use the website link provided by them. Instead, contact the Comptroller’s office at 800-252-8880 or email stop.spoofing@cpa.texas.gov.
