Alvin ISD: Annual report lacks letter grade

Date:

by Nicole Bradford

Alvin ISD board this month received the school district’s annual performance report from the state but with obvious omissions.

Missing are the A-F ratings for the district and campuses, as well as special distinctions.

“This year our (report) cover looks very bare because as of right now, TEA has not released any 2023 A-F ratings because of a pending lawsuit,” said Brent Shaw, Alvin ISD’s chief of Accountability and Assessment.

Compiled by the Texas Education Agency for every district and campus in the state, the annual report includes STAAR results, attendance, dropout and graduation rates, and career and college readiness.

After new metrics for calculating the letter grade ratings were announced, the TEA was temporarily blocked from releasing them after more than 100 school districts throughout the state sued over the changes. Under the new metrics, district and campus ratings could drop even if state testing scores improved.
Alvin ISD received a “B” overall in 2021-2022, the last year the ratings were given. The district’s annual report for 2022-23 is posted online at alvinisd.net under “accountability and assessment.” Beginning next week, paper copies will be available at each campus and at central administration offices.

Questions regarding the report can be directed to bshaw@alvinisd.net or 281-245-2515.
