She-shed, Repurposed Art a Hit at Home on Tour

Date:

By Karolyn Gephart

Walk on the Wild Side is the theme for Tonya and John Richardson’s backyard, and it lives up to the name. The artistic creations will be seen as part of the private gardens on the Heritage Gardeners Spring Garden Tour April 27-28 in Friendswood.

Homeowner Tonya Richardson has created garden art that will delight tourgoers with such items as a bedframe that is blooming, planters made from an antique coil spring mattress, broken pots that now are poetic, a Victorian orchid gazer, and a she-shed that will be talked about for months to come. It is a backyard to experience garden art and usable solutions that started as very different items. Every few steps offer more items to see.

The backyard will offer gardeners many new and wild ideas to try at their residences. It’s a visual delight. The wide variety of plants throughout is also part of the sights for tourgoers.

The Richardsons are one of five gardens on the tour this year. Tour hours are Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, from 1 to 5 pm. Tickets are available at local businesses in Friendswood and the Chamber of Commerce.

On the tour dates, tickets will be available at the Heritage Gardener clubhouse at 112 W. Spreading Oaks in Friendswood.

The annual garden club spring event will also offer a huge Plant Sale, Spring Vendor Market, Ask a Master Gardener opportunities to solve garden problems, raffles, and three gardening presentations inside the clubhouse on Saturday.

Creating a Pollinator Garden by Master Gardener Chris Anastas will occur from 9 to 9:30 am.

Growing Fruit in Your Backyard will be presented by Fruit Specialist Robert Marshall from 10 to 11 am.

Successfully Growing Plumeria will be presented by Master Gardener Loretta Osteen from 11:30 to 12:30.

Anyone interested is invited to attend. There is no pre-registration for the three events. All events other than the tours will take place at 112 W. Spreading Oaks in Friendswood.
