City crews were assessing street, drainage, and utility conditions after Hurricane Beryl dumped about 12 inches of water in the Pearland area overnight Monday.

“The western edge of our city over in Shadow Creek was closer to the eye wall,” said Mayor Kevin Cole, posting updates and videos of damage before and after the storm. “We didn’t make it into the eye wall, but we’re very close to it.”

Beryl made landfall near Matagorda early Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. In Pearland, the storm caused power outages, uprooted trees, and localized street flooding.

Pearland was on the “dirty” side of the storm, he said.

“We dodged a bullet in a lot of ways; this storm could have gotten much, much bigger,” Cole said.

About 2 million homes were without power, and Centerpoint officials estimated it could take a week before full restoration.
