Back to school Registration, events precede start of classes

As fall approaches, local school districts have set up online registration and back-to-school events for new and returning students.

Monday, Aug. 12, is the first day of the new school year for Pearland ISD students.
“Meet Your Teacher” night for students and parents is 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 22 for elementary campuses, Aug. 28 for middle schools, Aug. 26 for junior high schools, Sept. 10 for TCCHS and Aug. 26 for Dawson and Pearland high schools and PACE.

Returning students must log in on Skyward. Pearland ISD offers in-person support for online registration every Monday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Virgil Gant Education Support Center, 1928 North Main St.

Alvin ISD

Alvin ISD’s first day of classes for all students is Aug. 13, with Aug. 12 as the “transition day” or the first day of school for all pre-K, kindergarten, sixth-graders, and ninth-graders.
All students, both new and returning, must register online before school starts.

New students may visit alvinisd.net to begin the process, and returning students should log into their family access account and click on “2024-25 back to school forms.” Proof of residency is required for new students as well as those entering third, sixth, and ninth grades.

Alvin ISD Operation Backpack is hosting events for students with school supply vouchers. Distributions are 9 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Lewis Lane Center, 7400 Lewis Lane, Manvel, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 3, at Grace Episcopal, 200 W. Lang St. in Alvin.

School supply vouchers are available at the front office of individual campuses.

Meet the Teacher for elementary campuses in Alvin ISD are 4:30 to 6 p.m. Aug. 8. Junior high Meet the Teacher is 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 8.

Sales tax holiday

The state’s annual sales tax holiday weekend is scheduled for Aug. 9 -11.

Purchases exempt from sales tax include shoes, clothes, backpacks, lunch boxes, and most school supplies such as notebooks, chalk, markers, highlighters, and paper.

Backpacks, shoes, and clothing must be priced under $100 each. Purchases that do not qualify include jewelry, computers, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, or specialty items such as cleats or football pads.
