Sales tax holiday begins Friday morning

Date:

The state’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday weekend begins Friday morning, Aug. 9, for designated purchases, according to Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s office.

Sales tax won’t be applied to certain school supplies and clothes purchases until late Sunday at 11:59 pm.

Purchases exempt from sales tax include shoes, clothes, backpacks, lunch boxes, and most school supplies such as notebooks, chalk, markers, highlighters, and paper. To qualify, larger items such as backpacks, shoes or clothing must be priced under $100 each.

Purchases that do not quality include jewelry, computers, luggage, umbrellas, wallets or specialty items such as cleats or football pads.
A complete list of tax-free items that can be purchased is listed at TexasTaxHoliday.org.
