Letter to the Editor: Election Time

Date:

Dear Editor,

Election time – it’s almost here and each of us is involved to some degree. You may be enthusiastically campaigning for your chosen candidate – or you may be only vaguely aware of election day. Some races mean much more to me than others.

This is my 47th year to teach at Friendswood High School – my children and grandchildren are FHS 12-year graduates. It should not come as any surprise that the School Board Election is near and dear to me.

A number of years ago I had a young man (Russell) in my math class and I was so impressed with his unique and “precious” personality that I insisted upon meeting his mother, Rebecca Hillenburg, who was at that time principal of Friendswood Junior High. And so began a friendship covering so many years I can’t even count them. My first impressions of Rebecca were educational and professional as opposed to personal. As a principal she was dedicated to her students and her staff.

She listens. She contemplates. She researches. She seeks out experts. Did I mention, she listens? There are those who believe they already have all the information and answers needed – that is not and never will be Rebecca.

While she is the consummate professional as a board member – she is also the grandmother of two beautiful grandkids who are students in the district. She understands what it’s like to balance all the moving parts of an exceptional educational experience. She is open and honest – qualities that put you at ease and allow you to share your concerns with her.

Please reach out – educate yourself – investigate – and cast your ballot. Mine will be counted for Hillenburg! See you at the polls.

Jalna Westerfeld
