RV storage proposed for Dixie Farm site

If city officials approve, an RV and boat storage facility could come to a 15-acre property along Dixie Farm Road at Main Street.

“We’re surrounded by HOAs. We have another HOA going in across the street from us off 35, and as we all know we can’t store (RVs) by our homes,” said Pearland resident Paige McKee, who, along with her husband Jay, is looking to offer close-by storage for those with RVs. “Right now, we have to go 20 or 30 minutes away. We have done a lot of legwork in speaking with our neighbors.”

The couple is seeking a zone change from industrial to planned development to allow the facility to move forward. Feedback on the project was largely positive during a December 16 feedback session with the city council and Planning and Zoning commissioners.

Planning and Zoning Commissioner Derrell Isenberg pointed out that the property is near a landfill.

“I can’t imagine putting anything where you’re going to have a lot of people there all the time,” he said. “That particular dump doesn’t smell as bad as some of the others, but it does have a smell from time to time. I think this would be a good spot for this type of use.”

The McKee’s proposal calls for 377 units along Dixie Farm Road, including covered, angled spaces.

“I own a large rig, and I know how hard it is to back it,” Jay McKee said. “If you put them at a 60-degree angle it’s really easy to get them in and out.”

The next step in the process involves a public hearing at a future date.
