New Houston area code begins this week

Date:

A new 621 area code for the Houston area will begin being assigned to new lines on January 23, according to the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

The new code will be assigned to Houston and surrounding communities, including Brazoria, Waller, Chambers, Fort Bend, Liberty, and Montgomery counties. The new code could be assigned to customers requesting new service, adding a line, or, in some cases, moving service, as the PUC stated in a January 15 release.

Existing area codes — 281, 346, 713, and 832 — will remain in use.

Existing phone numbers or area codes will not change, and customers will continue to dial 10 digits for local calls.
