A new Pear-Scape Trail project with participation options will celebrate creativity throughout the city, organizers say.
Pearland now has 23 pear sculptures located in public spaces throughout the city through a program that began almost 10 years ago. A revitalized version of the Pear-Scape is part of a recently adopted cultural arts master plan for Pearland. The plan has called for an advisory committee that began meeting in March and an arts administrator position, filled by Sara Peters.
City Council and staff on Oct. 27 discussed possible guidelines for public art, which includes the updated Pear-Scape program that would build on the current trail.
Proposed guidelines call for two sizes of pears, the standard, 4-foot version and a smaller, 3-foot “pear blossom.”
“The Pear-Scape remains primarily a sponsorship program open to all,” arts master plan consultant David Plettner-Saunders said. “Sponsors can be a business, a nonprofit, a school, individual.”
Installation would be provided by Visit Pearland, which would also maintain a pre-qualified artist roster in addition to vetting new ones. Suggested sponsorship levels for the two sizes are $9,500 and $4,500.
Final guidelines for public art, which include murals, are expected to be presented to the council in about six months.
