PISD VATRE is close call in early voting

Date:

Early voting results released Tuesday night by the Brazoria County Elections office show a tight margin for Pearland ISD’s voter approval tax ratification election, or VATRE.
Just over 58 percent of the 5,152 people casting early or absentee ballots supported PISD’s adopted tax rate of just over $1.13 per $100 of valuation, with 41.5 percent against.
Unofficial election results were expected later Tuesday night.
State law requires school districts get voter approval to raise the maintenance and operations tax rate above a specified amount. If approved, the measure will bring in just over $11 million for the school district, which currently has a budget shortfall.
