Members of Gulf Coast Self Advocates recently celebrated the completion of the Texas Advocate Lead Project, a leadership development program designed to strengthen the voices of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The group’s final class brought together participants and several local community leaders, including Kemah Police Chief Raymond Garivey, Friendswood Mayor Mike Foreman and Lorrie Foreman, President of the Hope Village Board of Directors.
The three leaders shared their knowledge, experiences and suggestions with participants, encouraging them to continue developing their leadership skills and becoming more active advocates within their communities.
Gulf Coast Self Advocates (GCSA) serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Galveston, Brazoria and southern Harris counties. The organization promotes independence, community involvement and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to advocate for themselves and others.
The group was recently recognized as the 2026 Chapter of the Year by Texas Advocates, highlighting its work in local leadership, community service and legislative advocacy.
Through programs such as the Texas Advocate Lead Project, participants develop skills intended to help them communicate effectively, participate in community decisions and advocate for issues affecting people with disabilities.
In a statement following the final class, GCSA thanked the community leaders for taking time to meet with participants and support their development.
“Your willingness to share your time, knowledge, and suggestions to help our GCSA participants grow into even stronger leaders means so much to us,” the organization stated.
GCSA also expressed appreciation for the continued involvement of local officials and community organizations in supporting its mission.
“Thank you for investing in our advocates, encouraging their growth, and helping us continue to make GCSA even better,” the group stated. “Your support and commitment to our community make a difference, and we truly appreciate each of you!”
The completion of the leadership program marks another milestone for the organization as it continues working to expand opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to take active roles in their communities.
