Galveston County Master Gardeners celebrated 40 years of Master Gardeners service to the county on June 14, 2022 at the Galveston home of GCMG Mikey Isbell and husband Allen Isbell. An awards ceremony and dinner were part of the event.
MCs for the evening included Extension Agent – Horticulture Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service Galveston County Stephen Brueggerhoff and GCMGA President Kathy Maines.
Recognition was given to members with milestone awards, those serving 25 years plus, and members achieving Emeritus status.
Texas Master Gardener President (and our chapter member) Robin Collins presented TMG state awards as well.
Milestone year awards for 2021 were presented to Patsy Jewell and Linda Steber for 30 years; Jim Edwards, Julie Massey and Donna Ward for 25 years; Janice Beick, Kaye Corey, Trish McDaniel, Charles Myers and Lister Wygrys for 20 years; and Anne Baugh, Keith Boyston, Julie Moncur and Amy Lynn Williams for 15 years.
Members awarded for 25 years plus in 2022 included Jerlee Owens for 40 years; Herman Auer for 39 years; Velda and Terry Cuclis for 35 years; Ann Lyon for 33 years; Doris Heard for 32 years; Pasty Jewell and Linda Steber for 31 years Laura Bellmore, Mikey Isbell and Clarence Paul for 30 years; Joyce McMillan for 28 years; Philip Fox for 27 years, James Edwards, Julie Massey and Donna Ward for 26 years; and Karen Geary and Gene Speller for 25 years.
New Emeritus Members honored included Phil Cone, Willie David, Mary Demeny, Clyde Holt and Lester Wygrys.
State awards presented by Collins to the group included First Place for Written Education: GCMGA Online Store Plant Education; First Place for Research: 2021 Paste Tomato Trials’ First Place for Outstanding Organization; Second Place for Outstanding Individual: Kathy Maines; and Third Place for Educational Program A Passion for Plumeria.
At the event, Galveston Mayor Craig Brown presented a Proclamation to the group.
The GCMGs were also joined by new County Commissioner, Dr. Robin Armstrong.
