The public is being asked to take precautions after avian flu was found in Nueces County on the Texas coast.
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza is circulating among wild birds in Texas as fall migration begins for waterbirds, the Texas Parks and Wildlife announced on Oct. 23.
A highly contagious virus, avian flu can spread directly between animals and indirectly through contamination. The public can help, TPWD says, by limiting all unnecessary contact with wild birds.
Game bird hunters are asked to dispose of carcasses properly, wear gloves when processing, avoid processing or consuming sick birds, clean and disinfect all tools, and cook meat to proper temperatures. For information, visit tpwd.texas.gov.
