Pearland city leaders and staff on Monday welcomed two new council members, as Chad Thumann and Mona Chavarria took oaths of office.

The two positions were decided by a December 9 special election after councilmen Alex Kamkar and Jeffrey Barry stepped down from the council to run for House District 29, a post vacated by retiring State Rep. Ed Thompson.

“I am honored to serve this great city of Pearland,” said Chavarria, the lone candidate for her position.

Thumann, who defeated two opponents in his race, thanked those who supported him during the campaign.

“I’m proud to be here and serve — it’s the city I grew up in, so it’s special to me,” he said.
All council positions are at-large.
