Pearland ISD Input sought on 2024-25 calendar

Date:

Families, students, or school district staff unhappy with the timing of the winter holiday break — or any other part of Pearland ISD’s academic calendar — are being asked to speak now or resign to hold their peace regarding the 2024-25 school year.

Pearland ISD announced this month that it is seeking public input on a proposed calendar for the coming school year.

Like past years, the proposed calendar was developed by an advisory committee. The deadline to provide feedback on the proposed calendar versions is Friday, Jan. 5.

The current school year calendar, 2023-2024, was approved in February 2023 and drew criticism from parents largely about the timing of the holiday break that’s currently underway. Students were dismissed for the break on Dec. 21 and will return to class on Jan. 10. Though it was only one day longer than usual, many thought the break extended too far into January.

“The school calendar is what sets the schedule for the school year, and we recognize that it impacts those who live and work in the Pearland ISD community,” the district said in a statement inviting community input.

The 2024-25 school year calendar has two drafts available; both propose the winter break as Dec. 23 through Jan. 7. The winter break is typically a consecutive, two-week period.
