Pearland’s Juneteenth celebrations set for this Saturday include a festival at Independence Park, plus a unity walk and event at the Pearland Town Center.

Hosted by the Pearland MLKCC and Brazoria County NAACP, a unity walk plus entertainment and booths happen from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pearland Town Center, 11200 Broadway St.

In the evening, the city’s third annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival will be held at Independence Park, 3449 Pearland Parkway, from 6 to 10 p.m.

“Juneteenth, being a federal holiday, is a great way to show various members of our community that we all love each other,” said Eugene Howard, president and CEO of Visionary Outreach, which is collaborating with the city on the event.

The city on May 20 granted a permit for the event, which will require a temporary closing of Pearland Parkway so that parking at Pearland High can be used. Traffic control will be in place similar to the July Celebration of Freedom, city staff said.

“I’m glad to see this event growing,” Mayor Kevin Cole said. “Juneteenth is a historical moment in our country. There were people who didn’t find out about their freedom for two years, right here in Texas.”
