Composting is topic for first Heritage Gardeners meeting in 2025

Local Friendswood resident and avid gardener Sven Boes-Koefoed will speak to Heritage Gardeners at their regularly scheduled meeting on January 2, 2025, at 10 am. His topic will be Too Many Leaves: Compost and Make Soil.

Bors-Koefoed, a Galveston County Master Gardener, never puts fallen leaves in the landfill; he composts them. He gets soil filled with nutrients to grow his trees, roses, shrubs, vegetables, fruit, herbs, and more. He had a large backyard filled with harvesting beds, plumeria (his favorite), a barn, a composting area, a huge patio, and usually blooming flowers all around it. He and his wife, Kathy, enjoy having fresh vegetables all year.

He will share the steps to getting the great soil from leaves with Heritage Gardeners and their guests at their first meeting of the new year. Galveston County Master Gardeners recently attended a presentation on this topic by Bors-Koefoed. He is bringing it to Friendswood for gardeners here to enjoy and hopefully try in their yards.

Bors-Koefoed recently presented winning results from the East Texas Regional Pecan Show in January 2024 and the Texas Pecan Growers Conference and Trade Show in July 2024. He had won the 2023 Galveston County Pecan Show in the Classic and New Division First Place with varietal ‘Podsednik.’ He also won first place in the Natives Division. He received first place in the East Regional Show in College Station and in Tesas State Show in San Antonio.

The presentations and judging took over a year, and recently, Texas AgriLife Extension Agent-Horticulture Boone Holladay presented him with three ribbons, one from each event.

His presentation to Heritage Gardeners will be at 112 W. Spreading Oaks. Anyone interested may attend at 9:30 am for a Meet and Greet and refreshments and then at 10 am for the presentation.

The club members will have their business meeting following the presentation and begin working on their next large fundraiser, the annual Garden Tour of Homes. It will also include a large plant sale and a spring vendor market.
