Student wins 1st place at International HOSA Conference

Date:

Friendswood High School student Vikram Gupta has earned international recognition after capturing first place in Medical Reading at the 2026 HOSA International Leadership Conference, held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The competition, which brings together thousands of top health science students from across the United States and around the world, is the culminating event of the HOSA year and showcases the knowledge and skills of future healthcare professionals.

Gupta advanced to the international competition after a successful showing at the Texas HOSA State Leadership Conference earlier this year, where he qualified to represent Friendswood High School on the international stage. He was among a select group of Friendswood students who competed at the international conference under the guidance of HOSA advisor and health science teacher Heather Martin.

Medical Reading challenges students to demonstrate a deep understanding of healthcare-related literature and medical concepts through rigorous testing and analysis. Earning a first-place finish required Gupta to outperform a field of highly accomplished students from across the globe.

The achievement marks another milestone for Friendswood High School’s growing Health Science and HOSA programs, which have consistently produced state and national-level competitors.

Gupta will enter his junior year at Friendswood High School this Fall. In addition to bringing home an international championship, his accomplishment highlights the strength of the district’s commitment to preparing students for careers in medicine, healthcare, and biomedical sciences.

The HOSA International Leadership Conference serves as the organization’s premier annual event, bringing together future physicians, nurses, researchers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to compete, learn, and network with industry leaders.

With his international title, Gupta joins an elite group of student competitors who have demonstrated excellence in one of HOSA’s most challenging academic events and has brought international recognition to Friendswood High School and the community.

Heather Martin praised Gupta’s dedication and work ethic, noting that success at the international level requires months of preparation and an exceptional commitment to mastering complex medical concepts. His victory places him among the top health science students in the world and serves as an inspiration to other students considering careers in healthcare.
